of research set forth
in the Belmont Report
(1979) of the National
Commission for the
Protection of Human
Subjects. VT policies
and procedures involving
human subject research
have been formed to
comply with the Code
of Federal Regulation
and state and local
laws to protect individuals
from harm, provide
equitable selection

Foundations
of Responsible Research
Conduct
Research integrity
is the underlying
component of the trustworthiness
of research as a whole
and essential in preserving
public support for
research. Therefore,
it is critical that
VT is diligent in
its management and
oversight of research
conduct to ensure
responsible and ethical
expenditure of public
funds for research.
This workshop will
focus on 6 core areas
of research conduct
to include,
1) Data Management
& Integrity-explores
the implications of
privacy, data integrity,
data storage and retrieval
2) Conflict of Interest-explores
what constitutes conflict
of interest and regulations
and guidelines outlining
disclosure 3) Human
& Animal Subjects-explores
legal issues and policies
involving the use
of humans or animals
in research 4) Publication-explores
copyright laws, contributions
to literature, redundant
publication, plagiarism,
citations, and corrections/retractions.
5) Research Misconduct-
explores the fabrication,
falsification, or
plagiarism in proposing,
performing, or reviewing
research, or in reporting
research results.
6) Whistleblowers-explores
protections afforded
under law to those
who expose research
misconduct (2 hours)

will review budgeting
requirements unique

standards (CAS), direct
costs, indirect costs,
and general guidelines
for the treatment
of costs. The second

Administering
Personnel Costs on
Sponsored Projects
The majority of sponsored
expenditures are dedicated
to personnel costs.
Administering these
"soft-funded"
personnel requires
additional diligence
on behalf of the research
administrator. This
course will focus
on identifying the
extra steps required
when placing personnel
on sponsored projects.
Specifically, the
topics of fringe benefits,
cost transfers, non-sufficient
funds, and certification
of personnel activity
reports will be covered.

Solving
the Mystery of Cost
Sharing
What is cost sharing?
What is unallowable
and allowable as far
as cost sharing? If
cost share is approved,
how will it affect
the project once it
is awarded? What is
Virginia Tech's policy
on cost sharing? These
are some of the questions
that will be answered
by this workshop facilitated
by OSP Pre Award and
Post Award staff.
Individuals that are
involved in the proposal
process and project
management will find
this workshop useful.

Banner
and Research Administration
The
Office Sponsored Programs'
(OSP) staff will provide
a general overview
of common Banner forms
used in Research Administration.
Some of the questions
that will be answered
during this workshop
include; How do I
check balances with
and without indirect
costs included? How
do I search for a
grant number when
I know the proposal
number? How do I search
for an OSP administrator
on a grant? How do
I search for a grant
number when I only
know the title or
key words from the
title? This workshop
is designed for the
newcomer to research
administrator responsibilities.
