  Trademark — Use of Name

Does Virginia Tech have trademarks?

Yes. Virginia Tech has registered trademarks for the University’s names, logos, insignias and other graphics that are associated with Virginia Tech. The Office of Licensing and Trademark Administration has developed guidelines for use of the University’s trademarks. 

Should contracts protect the use of Virginia Tech’s name?

Yes. Every contract should include a provision that prohibits the other party from using Virginia Tech’s or employees names without prior written approval. The following clause should be included in every contract:

USE OF NAMESNeither party will use the name of the other in any advertising or make any form of representation or statement in relation to the Research which would constitute an express or implied endorsement of any commercial product or service without first having obtained written permission of the other Party.
