| Material Transfer Agreement
What is a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA)?
This is a specific agreement that allows for the transfer of material between the parties and provides the terms and conditions for the use of that material. Normally, the agreement will specify the exact material that is being transferred and how that material can be used and by whom. In some instances, the exact research procedures will be specified. The MTA usually also allows for return or destruction of any remaining material as well as the requirement that the research results be shared with the owner.
Are there different types of MTAs?
Yes. We have two types of agreements: one for the transfer of biological samples (Biological Material Transfer Agreement) and one for the transfer of other materials (Material Transfer Agreement). In addition, these agreements can provide for use in research only or allow commercial use of the material.
Who reviews MTAs at the University?
MTA’s that involve sponsored research, or may involve research in the future, are reviewed and negotiated by Carol Roberson. Other MTAs should be sent to the University Counsel for review and approval.
Do we have standard agreements that can be provided for informational purposes?
Yes.
