OTHER
SERVICES
FOR
RESEARCHERS
In
addition
to
assisting
faculty
with
obtaining
and
managing
sponsored
programs,
Virginia
Tech's
Research
Division
(in
which
the
Office
of
Sponsored
Programs
is
located)
provides
other
services
that you
may find
valuable.
INTELLECTUAL
PROPERTIES
Although
the
results
of
research
take
many
different
forms,
from
books to
inventions,
computer
software
to
musical
scores,
all can
be
classified
as
intellectual
properties.
Any may
result
in value
for the
owner(s),
and so
should
be
protected
under
patent
and
copyright
laws.
Virginia
Tech's
policies
on
intellectual
properties
(Insert

are
designed
to
protect
the
ownership
equities
of
authors
or
inventors,
as well
as the
university's
equity,
in
intellectual
properties
that
result
from
work
carried
on here.
Responsibility
for
policy
and
administration
in the
area of
intellectual
properties
resides
in the
Division
of
Research
and
Graduate
Studies,
and with
the
University
Committee
on
Intellectual
Properties,
made up
of
faculty
members
with
experience
in
patent
and
copyright
issues.
The
Chairman
of the
Intellectual
Properties
Committee
can
assist
you with
questions
about
copyrights
and
patents,
or about
Virginia
Tech's
policies
on
intellectual
properties.
Virginia
Tech
Intellectual
Properties,
Inc., a
non-profit
corporation
affiliated
with the
university,
protects
and
manages
intellectual
properties
developed
here. A
brochure
is
available
that
explains
the role
and
services
of VTIP
in more
detail.

In a
nutshell,
rights
to
patentable
or
copyright
properties
that
have
been
developed
using
significant
university
resources
belong
to the
university,
until
the
university
determines
it has
no
proprietary
interest
in the
properties.
These
properties
must be
reported
by the
author
or
inventor
to the
Committee
on
Intellectual
Properties,
which in
turn
will
review
and make
a
recommendation
as to
whether
the
university
should
retain
an
interest
in the
property.
If
proprietary
interest
by the
university
is
maintained,
VTIP may
provide
support
in
obtaining
copyright
or
patent
protection,
and work
to
market
the
property.
The
policy
also
states
that any
income
derived
from
such
properties
will be
shared
equally
between
the
university
and the
inventor
or
author,
after
expenses
for
protecting,
developing,
and
marketing
the
property
have
been
recovered.
RESEARCH
OPPORTUNITIES
OFFICE
The
Research
Opportunities

can help
you
identify
sources
of
funding
for your
research
projects.
Information
is
gathered
here on
federal-
and
state-sponsored
programs,
and on
private

In

FACULTY
EXPERTISE
DATABASE
We
maintain
a
faculty

that is
available
to any
staff
member
via the
VT
Intranet.
This
database
provides
a quick
sketch
of the
research
expertise,
interests,
and
profiles
of
faculty
members
who
elect to
participate.
If you
are
looking
to put
together
a
research
team,
reviewing
this
database
may be a
timesaving
first
step. In
addition,
information
on this
database
is
included
in the

which is
marketed
to
companies,
